This is my second blog post about South Manchester Parkrun at Platt Fields Park and is written by one of my clients, Julie. I had intended on posting this in early May but with having a busy few months I am only just getting round to posting it now. The run Julie did was from mid April and I did the second lap with her.

South Manchester Parkrun - 12/04/2025
Yesterday I completed my 100th Parkrun at South Manchester, Platt Fields Park. I felt incredibly emotional as I reflected on my journey from walking incredibly slowly around the course on my very first Parkrun in January 2022. It took me an hour and five minutes. I was pleased to finish (last but one). At that point I could barely imagine ever running 5K, let alone completing100 Parkruns.
A Few Hurdles Along The Way
My introduction to Parkrun came after a cancer diagnosis. This was followed 2 years later by a full blown stroke. Despite everything I turned up every week and ambled around the course. The wonderful thing about Parkrun is that everybody is welcome to participate. First timers are given a warm welcome as are tourists from near and far. You can walk, jog or run. Push your baby around and even bring the dog.

A fun, Friendly And Welcoming Environment
I got a call out in the pre-run briefing as it was my 100th event. Milestones are always celebrated and first timers and tourists are warmly welcomed. There were also plenty of supporters as I ran around the course. As I crossed the finish line I was cheered by a group of supporters and friends made through Parkrun. There were celebratory cakes too!
Parkrun Is Completely Free
South Manchester Parkrun is my regular one. Its close by and easy to get to. The course is mostly flat and the volunteers do an amazing job. I have also done Worsley Woods twice and Oxford but Platt Fields remains my favourite. All Parkruns are free to participate in. You can volunteer if you’d like to give something back.

Completing Parkrun With My Coach
I felt grateful to have my running coach accompany me around the second lap and over the finish line. I gave it all I could and with his support and encouragement achieved my fastest time this year (46.21). Although Greg has only been coaching me for a couple of weeks, the improvement he has brought about in my running and the change to my mind-set is amazing.
